Sigrid and Allegra crept up to the river, looking for any other signs of life. It was about seven meters across and moving at a slow, stately pace perpendicular to their direction. Allegra guessed this was the lowest point in this particular valley.

Sigrid pointed out the paw prints on the riverbank. Something four-footed had drunk here recently. Allegra also saw bird like claw marks. It was encouraging. There were creatures on the planet that could possibly sustain them.

“Humans?” Allegra signed.

Sigrid looked around and shook her head, then cautiously moved to the riverbank. She took a sample of the water and put it in her belt for Aster to test when they returned. Then she saw something that made her stand.

Allegra craned her neck to see what Sigrid was looking at. She, too, stood.

A bridge. A human-built metal and wood bridge. It looked sturdy and dirty, indicating that it had been around for a while and that it was permanent. It was also wide enough to support a ground vehicle. Allegra’s eyes followed the line to and from the bridge. There was a nascent road, but it had not been used in a long while. That meant there had to be roads elsewhere, too.

Sigrid walked back to Allegra, keeping her voice low. “That’s it. Proof.”

“Yeah. We need to get back to camp fast.”

Sigrid nodded. “But quietly. No clue as to where they are.”

Allegra nodded. The two of them all but ran back to the DropShip.
